Off-duty Chicago officer in critical condition after crash on Eisenhower Expressway

CHICAGO –An off-duty Chicago police officer is in critical condition with a broken neck and 2 broken legs, after a crash on the Eisenhower Expressway on the city’s West Side.

The officer is 32 years old and joined the Chicago Police Dept. in April of 2017.  He works out of the 8th District, Chicago Lawn.

The crash happened around 11:55 p.m. Sunday on the inbound side of I-290 at Kedzie Avenue.

The car was driving eastbound on the expressway and reportedly crashed into the left concrete wall.

The off-duty officer was the only person inside the car at the time of the crash. According to state police, no other vehicles were involved. No reports of any other injuries.

State Police shut down the 3 left lanes of the Eisenhower for nearly 4 hours while an accident reconstruction team tried to figure out the circumstances of the incident.  So far,  investigators have not released a possible cause for the crash.
