A homicide investigation is underway in suburban Oak Lawn after the death of a child. A relative of the child is in custody.

Police officers were responding to a call about an armed subject at a home in the 6600 block of West 91st St before 11 this morning.

When they arrived, police say they learned that an infant child had suffered a significant injury.

They attempted life support and the baby was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center and  pronounced dead a few hours later.

Police won’t talk about how the child died and will not give a gender.  They say the victim was under one year old.

The South Suburban Major Crime Taskforce is assisting in this ongoing homicide investigation.

“Family members indicated a relative was responsible,” said Michael Murray, Chief of Oak Lawn Police Department .  “That person is here at the police station and is part of the investigation and there is no danger to the neighborhood or Oak Lawn.”

Again police have a family member in custody and charges are pending.  The parents were not home at the time of the incident.

An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow.
