Traveling for business or pleasure can be fun, but it can also be hard to find favorite restaurants and things to do that you are sure you are going to like.
One Midwesterner, who used to travel for her work, is trying to make travel even better by tailor making it for you.
Ellen Prinzi, from St. Louis, is a former executive major league baseball who found herself on the road a lot over the past 10 years.
Finding restaurants she liked or shows and events she wanted to go to was not as easy as you might think, even with the dawn of social media and review sites like Yelp.
Her solution? The app Olio City.
Olio is a synonym for combination or mix. And when it comes to your likes and dislikes in life, Ellen is trying to learn all she can about her customers. The goal is to create an app sending her subscribers to places where they will find their favorite foods, events, concerts or sites in whatever city they travel to.
Ellen developed the app that uses algorithms to steer you toward your personality. In the same way Pandora does for music or Netflix does for movies, Olio City is reading your mood, your likes and dislikes to give you recommendations when you are exploring a new city or when you’re away on business.
“We believe that the future of travel is local and we want to highlight the best in local business,” Ellen said.
Ellen spent her 20’s living in New York, San Francisco and St. Louis working for the Mets, the Giants and the Cardinals. She became one of the first women to go to scout school in the major leagues. Life on the road for her confirmed there was a place for Olio in the travel market.
Here’s how it works. First, after you download the free app you take a short quiz to tell Olio a bit about your priorities. Then you choose your city and surf around. The user friendly space is easy to navigate and boasts having some of the most complete events lists around.
“We take city experts. Our experts here in Chicago write for Thrillest, Tribune, Eater, etc. And we go neighborhood by neighborhood and we only pick local businesses,” Ellen said.
There are no national chains and no fast food. It’s curated content that is original and it’s personalized.
Right now Olio City is up and running in St. Louis and Chicago with further expansion in 2017 planned for Nashville, New York, San Francisco, Austin and Kansas City.
It is iOS friendly only right now. An android version is in the works.
