SPOKANE, Wa. — The president of the NAACP in Spokane Washington is under investigation.

People want to know whether she misrepresented her ethnic background when she applied for a position on the citizen police ombudsman commission.

Rachel Dolezal has become the new face of the area’s civil rights movement.

According to Dolezal, striving for equality has made her a target for numerous hate crimes.

“It’s been highly frustrating, it’s been a stretch of years and certainly no small amount of stress for my kids as well as myself.”

Dolezal says she’s been victimized more than a dozen times in both Spokane and Coeur d’Alene including the appearances of nooses around her homes – yet police have made no arrests.

Now it’s Dolezal herself who’s under scrutiny.

In numerous postings and public appearances, Dolezal has represented herself as African American, including this application for a position on the police ombudsman commission.

A photo of her standing next to an older African-American man was posted on the NAACP Facebook page. The photo’s description claims the man is her father.

According to her birth certificate, both of her parents are Caucasian. They say she is too.

Dolezal’s public racial identity came under scrutiny on Thursday, when a reporter from KXLY held up that photo asked her a simple question.

This is how the conversation went:

“Is that your dad?”

“Yeah, that’s…that’s my dad.”

“This man right here’s your father? Right there?”

“You have a question about that?”

“Yes ma’am, I was wondering if your dad really is an African-American man.”

“That’s a very — I mean, I don’t know what you’re implying.”

“Are you African-American?”

“I don’t understand the question of — I did tell you that, yes, that’s my dad. And he was unable to come in January.”

“Are your parents…are they white?”

And that’s when Dolezal walked away from our interview in such a hurry she left her purse and car keys behind.
