CHICAGO -- D'Montre Smith's mother says her son was a good man, intelligent and hard working.
He had moved home and went back to college, also working at FedEx in order to pay for school.
At just 21 years old, Smith was the youngest of four children -- all boys.
His mother Karol told WGN over the phone Tuesday her son was a victim of mistaken identity, shot in the chest and killed while walking with his girlfriend at 102nd and May about 10:15 p.m
Smith had moved home and was enrolled at both Olive-Harvey and Harold Washington colleges, his sights set on becoming an architect.
So far, police have no suspects in custody in this case. Meanwhile, Smith’s family is making funeral arrangements to say goodbye.
