OAK FOREST, Ill.– Two toddlers were rescued after being left inside of an SUV while their mother shopped.

According to the Chicago Tribune, a man spotted a 3-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy in their car seats inside of an SUV outside of a Food 4 Less on 159th street in Oak Forest.

The front windows were closed and the back windows were rolled down a few inches, the Tribune reports, and the temperature outside neared 90 degrees.

The children’s mother, Shelby Vanderjack, came out of the store nearly 30 minutes later and claimed she left the air conditioning on and the car running.

According to the Tribune, police said the car was not running when they arrived and surveillance video showed she had been inside the store for 45 minutes, although Vanderjack claimed she had been gone only 10 minutes.
