WESTERN SPRINGS, Ill. -- A Metra accident near Western Springs has left one dead and led to major delays for all inbound and outbound trains east of Western Springs.
At around 6:20 a.m. this morning Metra BNSF train #1208 struck and killed a pedestrian.
The La Grange Police are working with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and Metra to collect details on the accident and the investigation is now underway.
Inbound and outbound trains were halted earlier in the day but are now moving again with major delays.

Metra BNSF trains are currently about 90 minutes late and Metra UPW trains are currently about 65 minutes late with extensive residual delays.

The accident has resulted in the closure of the Burlington Northern Rail Grade Crossings at Gilbert Ave (Willow Springs Road) and Brainard Avenue.
Police released a statement informing people to avoid the area to help alleviate traffic.
Patrons of the Metra system can board trains at the La Grange Road Station.
The crossings will be closed while police complete the accident investigation. The police anticipate the crossings could be closed till 9:30 a.m. while they complete the accident investigation.
