Pour them in the drain or flush them down the toilet, prescription medications work their way into lakes, rivers and streams contaminating the water.
Treatment facilities aren’t designed to remove those chemicals from the water supply. That`s why this Saturday September 27, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is hosting a “Take Back Day.” They`ll take your unwanted pills and medications from 10 am to 2 pm at three locations across the city and suburbs:
- Stickney Water Reclamation Plant at 6001 W. Pershing Rd, Cicero
- O’Brien Water Reclamation Plant (formerly north side), 3500 Howard St, Skokie
- Calumet Water Reclamation Plant, 400 East 130th St, Chicago
It`s a joint effort with the U.S. DEA. Together, the two organizations have helped remove hundreds of pounds of medicines from the waste stream.
