After years of fighting to legalize medical marijuana in Illinois patient applications are being accepted starting Tuesday.

Illinois is expected to be one of the most expensive places in the country to buy medical marijuana.

Most insurance companies don’t cover the cost and after tacking on state laws and fees many believe it could still be cheaper to buy illegal pot on the street.

Applicants whose last names begin with the letter A-L may apply online or by mail today through October.

The remaining patients may apply in November and December.

To qualify, patients must have a specified medical conditions, and must get a recommendation from their doctor.
