Man dead, 2 firefighters injured in West Side apartment fire

CHICAGO - A man is dead and two firefighters are injured after a fire at an apartment building on Chicago's West Side.

The fire began at 10:30pm Friday at 312 N. Central Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood.

It was contained to an apartment on the second floor.

The Chicago Fire Department says a man in his 50s was killed in the fire.  His name has not been released.

A firefighter was critically injured after falling down an elevator shaft in the 4-story building.  Another firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

About 30 people were displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
