CHICAGO — A man was found dead inside a house engulfed in flames in East Garfield Park.

The fire broke out after 1 a.m. Friday in the 500 block of North Ridgeway.

Firefighters found the body of  83-year old William Jackson in the kitchen, as they were battling the fire.

“They fire through the whole first floor and it extended into the attic,” said Chicago Fire Department Chief Jack Nagle.

Family members say Jackson had just moved from a care center back to his home where he lived for more than 60 years.

“He could hardly get around,” said his niece, Diane Mosley, “but he wanted to stay in his home.”

Mosley says Jackson had a caretaker, but she wasn’t there when the fire started.

“We don’t know if he was cold and trying to heat up his house,” said another niece, Venus Jackson.

Investigators don’t know what caused the fire yet, but they did say there weren’t any working fire alarms in the home.
