CHICAGO — Nerves were a bit high this morning as Jolinda Wade – better known on this day as Mama Wade – and the Mamas prepared to perform their song “Raise my Child” live on the WGN Midday News.

Penned by the South Side pastor, it was their first performance outside the church and followed another weekend of violence in Chicago.

Wade’s own sister Diann Aldridge is now helping raise four grandkids after their mother was shot and killed pushing her baby in a stroller. Diann buried her daughter Nykea Aldridge three days ago.

Diann, Jolinda, and the rest of their friends and family want to help other kids – tackling the question who’s going to raise my child. This coming weekend opening the doors of the Willie Mae Morris Empowerment Center, next to pastor Wade’s church in the West Pullman neighborhood, a community center to foster creativity, help kids explore dreams and create a village with parents to help raise a better community of people without the violence.

Jolinda hopes her song will also help inspire change among adults: teachers, politicians, police. She says the city needs to unify to keep more kids from being shot or grabbing for guns.. Diann Aldridge, while mourning the loss of her daughter, says parents need to stay positive.
