Jesse Owens’ name will be restored to a elementary school on the South Side.

The Chicago school board met Wednesday and agreed to switch the school’s name back to Jesse Owens Community Academy.

The name was dropped after the school in the West Pullman neighborhood merged with Gompers Elementary over the summer.

Owens’ daughters, who were at the school board meeting, thanked officials for “recognizing the importance of the issue.”

The change takes effect immediately.
