A Joliet couple is charged with endangering the life of a child after their two small children were found alone in dirty diapers in a squalid motel room on Thursday afternoon.

Peji Patterson is being held in the Will County jail on charges related to leaving his 5-month-old and 1-year-old sons alone in deplorable conditions, according to Joliet authorities.

An officer responding to the scene at the Star Inn on West Jefferson Street said the older child was lying on the bed in a diaper and t-shirt, chewing on a lighter.

The younger child was lying under some pillows on the floor, according to Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregroy.

Patterson is also being held on battery charges for allegedly striking the mother of the children, 22-year-old Stephanie Patterson.

She was treated at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet and released on a recognizance bond.

Her husband is in Will County jail pending a bond hearing. In addition to child endangerment and domestic battery, he is also charged with violating an order of protection.

The children have been placed in the care of a relative.
