An Indiana man says he feels lucky to be alive after a  wayward semi tire barreled into his car on the interstate near Gary.

About 15 minutes into his morning commute from Hobart, Indiana to Oakbrook Terrace, Andrew Bruce saw it coming right at him.

“I saw it was a truck tire bouncing in front of my car… I heard the thunk and the glass breaking,” he said.  “The roof of the car was caved in the side view mirror bounced off me somewhere and  hit me in the face.”

Andrew put on his flashers, and pulled over to the shoulder on I-80/94 near Burr St in Gary.  His wife Dawn was driving just a few cars behind him and pulled over too.

“I could not believe he was up standing there talking on the phone to 911 with the damage I saw,” she said.

Indiana state police responded and Andrew’s car was towed.  The tire nor the semi-truck it fell off were located.

“If I was going a little faster or left a second earlier the situation would be drastically different,” Andrew said.

Andrew feels lucky to be alive.  He and his wife reminding all drivers to check their tires before hitting the road.

“If I hadn’t been as lucky today, it would have been a lot worse.  Maybe it would have been someone’s daughter or wife sitting in the passenger seat when that tire impacted it. Then you’d have to live the rest of your life with that.”
