Illinois house speaker Mike Madigan spoke with WGN’s Tonya Fransisco in Philadelphia at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday to discuss his experience.

“I was very pleased and overjoyed to be there,” Madigan said.

Madigan described Clinton’s nomination as a “wonderful occasion” because the Democratic Party of America has nominated the first African-American president and now, the first female presidential nominee.

“The democrats are coming together,” he said. “They are coming together against the extremism of Trump and Governor Rauner.”

Budget Action

Madigan discussed the need for a democratic governor in Illinois.

“Democrats are like most Illinoisans, they are not happy with the extremism of Bruce Rauner.”

He explained that with Rauner, there are issues regarding health care and education that need to be addressed. He also spoke out about future budget action in Springfield.

“We don’t expect to be in Springfield until after the general election,” Madigan stated.

Preckwinkle

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle gained attention on Monday when she sat next to Bill Clinton on the first day of the Democratic Convention.

“This signals democrats are coming together and recognizing the importance of keeping democrats in the White House,” Madigan said.

However, the Chicago leader not seen in Preckwinkle’s seat was Rahm Emanuel.

“He’s on the way, he will be here,” Madigan said.
