CHICAGO — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) wants to make sure all Illinoisans are ready for the winter season.

They have launched this year’s “Winter Weather – Get it Together” campaign alongside the Illinois Tollway and Illinois State Police.

Jose Rios, IDOT’s region one engineer, focused on tips for driver’s including:

  • Slow down
  • Increase distance between vehicles
  • Avoid using cruise control
  • Don’t crowd the plow
  • Watch for black ice on roads which appears clear but can be treacherous
  • Intersections, ramps, bridges, and shady areas are prone to icing
  • Prepare an emergency kit
  • Follow Scott’s Law by slowing down and moving over for stopped emergency, construction, and maintenance vehicles

He also added IDOT tracks road conditions across the state which can be found here.

The tollway’s spokesperson noted they are prepared with nearly 200 plows, 200 employees, and more than enough winter related supplies (such as salt) to keep the regions primary road travel arteries as clear and safe as possible. He also noted if anyone is ever in need of assistance, they can call *999 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The press conference can be watched in its entirety in the video above.
