The Chicago school board is set to vote May 22 on the closure or consolidation of 54 failing schools.CPS

But, independent hearing officers have come out against closing these schools:  Melody Elementary, Calhoun, Mahalia Jackson, King, Manierre, Mayo, Morgan, Overton, Stewart, Stockton, Williams Elementary and Williams Middle School, Near North and Buckingham.

In some cases, the hearing officers said the displaced students’ new schools are no better than the ones they’re leaving.

In others, the officers say cited neighborhood safety concerns.
