A firearm was discovered Thursday night in the carry-on luggage of a 62-year-old man at Midway International Airport, officials said.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, the gun was found in the luggage of a man traveling from Chicago to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

Police were notified and the man was arrested, officials said.

Details on how the gun was found were not available. TSA officials said all carry-on baggage is screened at X-ray units before passengers board.

Firearms are prohibited in carry-on luggage but weapons can be transported in checked bags if unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline, officials said.

It was the fifth weapon found in carry-on luggage this year at Midway, according to officials.
