People's Gas crews are in the Morgan Park neighborhood today, turning off gas service to 52 homes in the area so they can safely repair a gas line that was damaged Tuesday when a house exploded.

That explosion demolished a home in the 2100 block of West 107th Place.  People's Gas says it was caused by a third party crew working nearby and damaging a service gas line that ignited.  No one was hurt in the explosion.

People's Gas says gas service was restored to all but one customer that night.  But before they can get that service restored, they have to shut down the main line so they can get that done safely.

People's Gas warned 52 homeowners in the area about the disruption last night.  It could take until 9 or 10:00 tonight before the gas gets turned back on because crews have to physically go into each individual home and reignite all the gas appliances in the home.

The home that exploded belonged to a CPS teacher.  The Alderman in the area has set up a fund to help the family out.  If you would like to donate, the Sheahan Family fund is at the Beverly Bank and Trust, 10258 South Western Avenue.
