A GapKids advertising campaign on Twitter has sparked controversy on social media after some believe the company’s attempt to empower young girls comes across as racist instead.
The brand’s Ellen DeGeneres kids clothing line released its newest campaign Friday with one picture featuring four members of an all-kids circus troupe. In the photo, a white troupe member is leaning on her black troupe member’s head. The caption under the image says, “Meet the kids who are proving that girls can do anything.”
The post immediately incited a backlash on Twitter:

GapKids was quick to issue an apology, and replaced the photo on its website with a different picture of the same four girls.
