Man killed as driver tries to flee police in Elgin

A man is dead after a driver tries to take off from police during a traffic stop in Elgin.

Elgin police officer made the stop just after 5 p.m.  Tuesday night.
Officers discovered the driver was wanted on a warrant from the U.S. Marshals office for evading arrest.
That’s when that driver of a white  2011 Nissan  Maxima took off and sped away from officers.

Officers did not chase the driver, but they say he was speeding when he blew through a stop sign about four blocks  down the road, hitting a mini-van.
The mini-van flipped over several times before coming to a rest in a yard.

The unidentified driver of the mini-van was taken to Sherman Hospital and later pronounced dead.

His name has not been released pending notification of family members.

Perry Beck says he was inside his home when he heard the sound of the crash.   He said you could tell the car was speeding by the sound of the collision.

The driver of the Nissan and his female passenger were injured and taken to the hospital.

The woman is believed to be the girlfriend of the driver of the Nissan. She was critically injured.

Police have not released the name of the driver of the Nissan.
