CHICAGO — A former standout athlete was shot and killed in the city’s North Lawndale neighborhood.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. Monday at a convenience store in the 4100 block of West Roosevelt.

26-year-old Jonathan Mills, a former standout basketball player, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In 2009, Mills lead the North Lawndale Phoenix to the Public League title.

Later, he attended Southern Mississippi University and then went on to play for the Chicago Fury of the Midwest Basketball League.

Mills’ coaches said he was one the best rebounders to ever come out of Chicago and he was a great guy.

Friends and family gathered at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known.

No word on any suspects.
