Heavy rain, hail pelt morning commute; flight delays, cancellations

A fast-moving wave of thunderstorms was pelting the Chicago area this morning with heavy downpours and hail.Another wave of storms is expected to rake the area this evening with winds up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

At 8 a.m., pea-sized hail was being reported from the Wisconsin border to Aurora, according to the Chicago Weather Center. Larger hail was reported southwest of Sandwich, it said. Winds gusts of 50 mph was reported at Rochelle.

The storms were causing delays and cancellations at O’Hare International Airport. As of 8 a.m., more than 80 flights had been canceled at O’Hare and more than 160 flights were being delayed, according to FlightStats.

The weather service said another round of storms will hit tonight with a threat of damaging winds and up to 2 inches of rain.
