2 firefighters injured in massive fire in Chicago’s Little Village

CHICAGO — Two firefighters were injured in a massive fire on the city’s West Side.

The fire started around 3 a.m. today in an industrial area in the 2500 block of South Rockwell Street in Little Village.  210 firefighters were on the scene trying to put out the blaze.

Fire officials say it started inside a wood pallet company, then spread to a muffler business next door.  It quickly accelerated because of combustible materials inside.

One firefighter suffered a shoulder injury, another shortness of breath.  They were both take to Rush Hospital for treatment and are expected to be OK.

Neighbors told WGN this is the second fire at the pallet company.  The first one happened last year.

Fire crews brought the fire under control at around 5:30 a.m.

Investigators including from the bomb and arson unit arrived on the scene to try and determine what sparked the fire.

Several streets around the area remain blocked off.

No reports of any injuries.
