CHICAGO -- Close to 3500 Chicago athletes competing in the spring games at the biggest Special Olympics event of the year in Illinois.

The athletes have spent months training mentally and physically for the 2015 Spring Games that will be held at Eckersall Stadium on the Far South Side.

They are here to compete and most importantly to support.  They will take on the long jump, the shot put, the high jump, a wheelchair pentathlon and more than a half dozen foot races.

While the social aspect is a big draw for many competitors, this is also serious work for others.

These athletes train with coaches for eight weeks prior to the big competition but the encouragement can last a lifetime.
