Some science and technology improvements are coming to a south suburban school thanks to seven of its young students.

Their smartphone app design earned them the title of “Best in Region” for the Verizon Innovative App Challenge.

The Remember Me smartphone app is a collection of pictures and notes about loved ones and friends.  Student Annie Gainer was motivated to design the app after her and her family watched as her grandfather’s Alzheimer’s quickly took away precious family memories.

Annie and other 6th graders from St. Catherine of Alexandria set to work on designing the app.

The Oak Lawn students beat out about 1200 other Illinois middle school teams for the state title in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge. And just last month Verizon named the school “Best Middle School in the Region,” a title that comes with a $5,000 dollars for the school’s stem program.

While the students are excited about the improvements the money will allow, teachers see the win as inspiration for kids throughout the school.
