It may feel like it’s miles away from the Chicagoland hustle and bustle, with it’s sunshine, wildlife and tranquility, but the Des Plaines River Trail is actually right in its backyard.
It has taken the Lake County Forest Preserve 54 years to complete it.
The trail was built piece by piece over the decades while raising money and acquiring land. The unbroken greenway runs from Russell Road far North to the county border at Lake Cook Road.
Lake County Forest officials have launched the Des Plaines River Trail Challenge to entice everyone to tackle the entire length of the 31.4 mile trail.
The encourage you to run it, hike it, row it, bike it - and then log it all for a chance to win prizes.
An interactive map on the challenge webpage can help you navigate where to park, where to enter, what kind of terrain is in a particular area and the activities allowed.
