Rail Safety Week in Illinois offers a time to be reminded of the caution you need around railways.
Last year in Illinois, there were 134 crashes involving a train and a vehicle and 48 incidents involving a person who trespassed onto the tracks. In total, 74 people were injured and 53 people lost their lives.
17-year-old Lexi Turner will be among this year's numbers. Earlier this month, a Metra train struck and killed her as she was walking on the tracks in Lemont listening to music with earbuds.
Her friends and family say they knew she liked to take walks near the tracks and some of them have even gone with her. But now they know the dangers that lie there are all too real.
Lexi’s family shared their heartbreaking story with WGN’s Sarah Jindra in hopes that it will show others why track safety is so important.
