WAUKEGAN, Ill. — A former suburban Chicago elementary school teacher has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for molesting two students.

Michael Vucic, of Lake Forest, who formerly taught at Gavin South Middle School in Ingleside, pleaded guilty in September to criminal sexual assault and possession of child pornography. Several dozen counts that could have resulted in a 120-year sentence were dropped.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Fred Day asked that Vucic be sentenced to 55 years. Defense attorney Elliott Pinsel asked that Lake County Circuit Judge Daniel Shanes give his client a lesser sentence.

In pronouncing the sentence on Thursday, Shanes took issue with Vucic’s statement to the court that he had “consensual” sexual relationships with the girls, which started when one victim was younger than 13. Shanes said “rape” is a good word to describe what Vucic did to the victims.
