EVANSTON — The City of Evanston has a warning for its residents and businesses: clear the snow off your sidewalks or you’ll have to pay up.

As of Wednesday, there was still snow on the sidewalks in front of 56 homes. The city says if the snow isn’t removed by Thursday, a private contractor will do it and the property owner will be billed.

City rules say property owners have to clear a 36 inch path within 24 hours after it snows. The city has issued violation notices, and is utilizing door hangers to remind people to take care of their properties.

If you are elderly, disabled, or sick, you can call the city and it’ll send a volunteer out. It’s had 100 requests so far.
