CHICAGO  — Mayor Emanuel backtracked today and says he supports a federal investigation into the Chicago police department in the wake of the Laquan McDonald police shooting.

24 hours ago, Emanuel said Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan was “misguided” to seek a U.S. Justice Department investigation of CPD.

This comes after several instances of criticism including Hillary Clinton who said she was “deeply troubled” by the shooting.

With Governor Rauner by his side, Mayor Emanuel helped open Google’s new office in the West Loop. During the event, Emanuel clarified his remarks and stance saying,  “I own any of the confusion and I want be clear. I was answering a question as it relates to, and hoping that the investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago investigation and the FBI here in Chicago, which started a year ago, would wrap up their investigation rather than add one there.”  He added,  “I welcome the engagement of the justice. We have a long road ahead of us as a city and welcome people to help us do what exactly we need to do.”

The Laquan McDonald shooting has put a spotlight on Chicago police tactics. And Mayor Emanuel continues to take heat. Some have called on him to resign. something he once again today said he would not do. Instead,. Emanuel says he’ll work to restore the public’s confidence in him.

“I’m going to work at it every day. First of all, my actions will be a piece of that. My words and the follow through on my words to make sure those actions are essential and I have a lot of work to do,” he said.

Also today, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin joined the chorus of politicians calling for a federal probe of Chicago police. In a statement, Durbin said: “The shooting death of Laquan McDonald is just one of a number of troubling incidents that have frayed the relationship between the CPD and the community it serves, and in truth, this most recent incident is only the latest in a series of troubling events over many years.”
