The people who take care of the roads are moving into high gear earlier than usual. The low temperatures and slick surfaces this weekend are causing Illinois transportation officials and State Police to launch the "Ice and Snow-Take it Slow" campaign Monday.

"Start with a safe vehicle," said Illinois State Police Lt. Dave Byrd.  Byrd also offered the following tips: have an adequate spare tire and car fluids in your vehicle, as well as a charged cell phone for emergencies.  "Slow down at intersections, off ramps, curves and bridges," he added.

Last winter the state used 800,000 tons of salt on the roads. This year, IDOT says it has a million tons of salt ready to deal with the snow.
