CHICAGO — A family spokesperson said the violent circumstances of Nykea Aldridge’s death couldn’t be avoided, but her friends and family would try to focus on celebrating her life during today’s service.
Dozens attended the funeral service of Aldridge Saturday. The 32-year-old mother of four was slain last week as she pushed her newborn baby in a stroller, after enrolling one of her other children in school.
Aldridge was a cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade, who also attended the funeral, with his wife Gabrielle Union.
Police arrested 22-year-old Derren Sorrells and his 26-year-old brother Darwin Sorrells Jr. Both have been charged with first-degree murder. Police say both have known gang connections. police say Aldridge was not the intended target.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson also attended the service because he has a relationship with the wade family.
A fund for Aldridge’s children has been set up at Seaway National Bank on 87th Street.
