Police in Waukegan are asking for the public's help as they search for the hit and run driver who left a young man dead.

The victim, Adrian Gonzalez, is described as a bright, constantly-smiling young man with a terrific future.

The 21-year-old hung on for three days after being struck down. Jose Morales, the victim's stepfather said "his heart was beating I guess the machines were keeping him alive but there was no life in his eyes anymore."

Adrian was walking with his uncle and friends around 11:40 p.m. Sunday, when witnesses say a silver or gray SUV sped out of a side-street, hit him, and kept going.

He suffered severe head trauma and died at the hospital Wednesday.

Adrian’s relatives, who gathered Thursday for a candlelight vigil, are hoping an arrest comes soon.

Police want that driver to turn himself in.

Days later, witnesses here are still stunned by what they saw.

Brooke Edwards "They hit him and literally took off-- did not stop, didn't do anything."
