CHICAGO  — A woman riding a bicycle in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood died Friday morning in a collision with a flatbed truck.

The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Virginia Murray of Chicago, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

Her death is believed to be the first bike-sharing fatality in the United States.

Police say both the bicyclist and the truck driver were heading north on Sacramento, and both apparently attempted to turn east onto Belmont at the same time.

Police say the woman was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.  She was later pronounced dead.

Murray worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield.  She was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Chicago Police Major Accident Investigation Unit is examining this case.

So far no charges have been filed against the truck driver.
