CHICAGO — It’s February in Chicago, so this Arctic blast wasn’t completely unanticipated. But for those who had to be outside, they key was to keep from freezing was bundling up. For those who needed a place to go, they were encouraged to call 311 to find a warming shelter in the city.
Staying warm was critical on this brisk and blustery day. The city’s warming shelters were open for those who needed somewhere to go on a frigid day when windchills plunged below zero.
Some found shelter at bus stops…or in heated cars.
The cold temps were partially to blame for some south side crossing gates getting stuck, creating some signally problems, which were quickly resolved. But those who work outside and KNEW they had to be in the elements dressed accordingly.
Mostly everyone we talked to said that layering up was the key to keep from becoming a human popsicle.
