One of the most recognizable voices in hip hop, Phife Dawg, from the legendary 90's group A Tribe Called Quest, has died.
Malik Isaac Taylor, better known as Phife or Phife Dawg, was 45 years old, Rolling Stone reports.
A Tribe Called Quest is credited with adding a new dimension to the genre with its seamless weaving of hip-hop with jazz and R&B.
The group faded into the background in the late 90's as Phife fought ongoing health battles undergoing a kidney transplant in 2008 to deal with a longtime battle with diabetes.
They made a rare appearance with the roots on the tonight show last November. In 2011, Pfife was in Chicago talking about a documentary on the band's breakup and talked to WGN about today's music.
