It takes a lot of work to keep buses and trains running smoothly in the cold, snowy weather gripping the Chicago area.

CTA officials at the maintenance yard at 5601 South Kilpatrick Avenue near Midway Airport say it is all about preventative maintenance.

When it gets this cold, metal on metal can become a huge problem and the trains cannot run as quickly or efficiently.  To mitigate that issue maintenance crews are essentially greasing the wheels and the third rail — a painstaking but necessary process.

A CTA spokesman tells WGN there have been a few delays on the Brown Line today but the vast majority of the trains have been running on time.
