The Chicago Police Department says its proud of taking 1,000 illegal guns are off the streets and the top cop doesn’t want that number to go unnoticed.

In a news conference today with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Superintendent Garry McCarthy also touted the newest crime numbers saying shooting are down.  He says it’s not a fluke or the weather, it comes down to strategy.

According to CPD, there were 30% fewer shootings this year compared to the same time last year.  They also say there were 45% fewer gang-related shootings.

But Mayor Emanuel and Superintendent McCarthy agree more needs to be done.  They both called for changes in state and federal gun laws.
