CHICAGO, Ill. -- Chicago police say they made nearly 80 arrests in a bust designed to coincide with Labor Day weekend.
CPD leaders say they targeted areas on the West Side where they knew drug activity was happening. They made a series of drug buys over the past several weeks which led to the arrests on Thursday and Friday.
In addition to confiscating drugs, police say they also were able to get 11 handguns and one rifle off the streets as a result of the bust.
CPD leaders say the bust was designed to target areas that are hard hit by gun violence and coincide with the holiday weekend, which is traditionally one of the most violent in the city.
They say they also wanted to make the arrests before the start of school this Tuesday to make those West Side neighborhood safer for children as they head to the classroom.
