Instead of doing some hard time, some Cook County inmates are doing some hard labor.

It is park of a one-of-a-kind alternative work program where they tear down to build up -- communities and jail inmates.

The program is the brainchild of Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.

Sheriff Dart says it took a couple of years to clear some legal hurdles but they're well on their way now.
The group has torn down seven houses in the last few months; homes that are not only a blight on the community bringing down property values, but also a haven for crime.
And Sheriff Dart says as the program progresses he envisions not only demolishing abandoned properties but rehabbing some others, too.
