CHICAGO — The Cook County Jail is on lockdown because not enough staff showed up for work today.

The sheriff’s office sent out a series of tweets this morning to notify the public.

18-percent of the jail’s 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift did not make it to work today.

Public visitation will continue as scheduled.

However, inmates will remain in their cells except for medical or mental health check-ups.

The lockdown will continue until staffing levels return to normal.
