CHICAGO — The City of Chicago plans to pour $15 million into making CTA train stations safer, raising the necessary funds by imposing new fees on rideshare services like Uber and Lyft.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced the “Safe and Secure” program at an “L” station on the West Side Tuesday. The initiative includes a wide range of measures, including new lighting and repairs for all 146 CTA rail stations.

It also adds 1,000 new high-definition cameras, while upgrading another 3,800 to HD across the city. More than 100 cameras are slated to go up at bus turnarounds as well.

Chicago police say the new cameras will help them catch criminals who prey on CTA riders, pointing to the recent arrest of three alleged armed robbers as evidence of their effectiveness.
