CHICAGO — A child and an adult were taken to the hospital Wednesday after an apartment fire on Chicago’s South Side.

Crews responded to the 700 block of East 93rd Street around 4:30 p.m in the Burnside neighborhood for a fire in a two-flat. There was a 94-year-old man and a 2-year-old boy inside the building.

Fire officials said both the child and adult were rescued and taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious to critical condition.

No other injuries were reported.

A neighbor was told someone was cooking on the stove and went to sleep. However, officials have not said how the fire started.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to help people who had been displaced.

The investigation is ongoing.
