CHICAGO — An 8-year-old boy is dead following a shooting on Chicago’s South Side, police said.
Police said the shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. Monday at an apartment building on the 3800 block of S. Rhodes Ave. A source tells WGN News the boy was inside an apartment when a family member was handling the gun that went off, striking the boy in the head.
The child, who police said was shot in the head, was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner has identified the boy as Jaiden Hines.
It is unknown at this time if the shooting was intentional. According to a source, the family member ran away before the boy was transported to the hospital.
Police did not reveal where the gunfire came from and no one is in custody.
The shooting is under investigation.
