CHICAGO — Three students and an 18-year-old were shot Wednesday at a business directly in front of Carl Schurz High School.
At around 2:45 p.m., officers responded to the area of Milwaukee Avenue and Addison Street on the report of multiple people shot.
Police said a 15-year-old was shot in the face and neck. He was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
Another 15-year-old was shot in the back, a 17-year-old suffered a graze wound to the leg and an 18-year-old was shot in the leg. All three were transported to various hospitals in good condition.
The shooting happened on the patio of La Michoacana Ice Cream Shop. Police said two of the victims were CPS students and one goes to an alternative school. The Chicago Teachers Union confirmed two of the teens were students at Schurz.
Police are looking for a dark SUV that shots were fired out of. It fled eastbound on Addison.
Police said the shooting happened after some students had already been released from the school for the day, while others were still in class.
A mother waiting to pick up her freshman daughter heard the gunshots.
“Next thing that we know, we see all the police officers and they said, ‘don’t come, don’t come’. It was really sad to see all the kids crying,” Adrana Merlos said.
An increased police presence is planned at the school.
Police have not made any arrests so far. In addition to the increased police presence, the Logan Square neighborhood association will be gathering outside the school with donuts and flowers to support students and staff.
CPS released the following statement and said the school did go into lockdown.
“Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is working closely with Chicago Police Department (CPD) as we respond to a shooting near one of our high schools, just prior to the school’s dismissal bell. The school went on a lockdown while the CPD responded and that lockdown has since been lifted and students have been released. We will communicate any additional information with the school community. Our thoughts are with those individuals injured in this incident.“
