CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy was shot to death Thursday afternoon on the West Side.

At around 2:05 p.m., police responded to the area of Flournoy and Central Park, located in Homan Square, on the report of a shooting.

Police said a 14-year-old boy, later identified as Maleek Smith by family, discovered in an alley with a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

As children played nearby, home on spring break, detectives combed the neighborhood looking for evidence. Some of the buildings nearby do have surveillance cameras.

Crisis responder Andrew Holmes said a gray car was seen leaving the area moments after the shooting.

“I heard the plea from his sister, and I’m going to work to do the best they can find who took her brother’s life. This family is very shaken, this city should be very shaken. This neighborhood and this area should be shut down until they find out who the shooters are,” Holmes said.

At this time, it’s unknown if any suspects are in custody. Anyone with information can leave an anonymous tip at cpdtip.com.
