CHICAGO — At least five people were killed, and more than 40 others were injured, in shootings this weekend across Chicago.
Among those injured is a 13-year-old boy who was shot in the city’s McKinley Park neighborhood Sunday morning, according to police.
Neighbors woke up Sunday morning to flashing police lights and crime scene tape surrounding a red bicycle on its side in the grass.
Police said the boy was on the sidewalk riding his bike in the 3700 block of South Wood Street just before 7:55 a.m. when he was approached by an unknown car, and an occupant inside opened fire.
One neighbor tells WGN he heard half a dozen gunshots. Another says she thought the sounds were fireworks – until she heard the screams.
The boy was struck to the head and neck and was transported to Stroger Hospital initially in critical condition.
Detectives are working to figure out whether he was the intended target and who was responsible for the shooting.
There is no one in custody and the shooting is under investigation.
