CHICAGO — The city of Chicago filed a second lawsuit today against Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Department of Justice over federal funding for sanctuary cities.
The city accuses the federal government of tying crime fighting funding for this year to what it calls new and unlawful immigration enforcement rules.
The city filed a similar suit over the withholding of law enforcement grants last year as well.
The Trump administration has added new rules against cities protecting undocumented immigrants in order to receive the grants.
Despite a court win last year, Chicago has yet to receive any of the grant money for 2017. But in 2016, the city received $2.6 million from the grant, which helped fund new vehicles and equipment for Chicago police.
Other sanctuary cities have also sued and won. Just last week, a federal judge sided with San Francisco, calling the link between grant funding and immigration enforcement “unconstitutional”.
